First-ever female Muslim judge in US washes up dead on Hudson River bank
The
first-ever female Muslim judge in the US has been found floating on the
Manhattan side of the Hudson River, it has been reported.
Sheila
Abdus-Salaam's body was discovered on Wednesday (12 April) afternoon.
The 65-year-old bore no signs of trauma and she was fully clothed,
according to police. A medical examiner will determine the cause of her
death, but it is not thought to be criminal, CBS News reported.According to the New York Post, the associate judge on New York State's
highest court – the Court of Appeals – was reported missing from her
Harlem home earlier in the day. Her identity was confirmed by her
husband.New York Governor Andrew Cuomo paid tribute to the Columbia graduate and
first African-American woman to be appointed to the state's Court of
Appeals. "Justice Sheila Abdus-Salaam was a trailblazing jurist whose
life in public service was in pursuit of a more fair and more just New
York for all," Cuomo said in a statement on Wednesday.
